Cruise Port Overview
Livorno, Italy (Pisa/Florence)

The port city of Livorno, Italy mainly serves as a gateway to the famous nearby cities of Pisa and Florence, but it has a unique seaside Italian town flavor all on its own that is worth exploring.
The cruise we were on docked in this port for 2 days and it overnighted in the port. There were several passengers that we talked to who did a night off of the ship with local accommodations, but we found out from them that it does require prior permission and paperwork from the cruise line to be able to do this.
The second day in port, we stayed local and explored the town of Livorno on foot. We toured through the Fortezza Vecchia, which is the medieval fort overlooking the port and the Venezia Nuova which is an old military garrison looking over the inner part of the city. We also did some local shopping in the city center and capped it off with a fabulous lunch at a local seafood cafe. There were not a lot of people crowding the town which made it great for touring on our own.
The first day in port, we took a ship excursion “Florence & Pisa on Your Own” that provided an all-day bus trip to both Pisa and Florence. We took the bus from Livorno to Pisa early in the morning and saw the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa and its surrounding buildings. Then we re-boarded the bus and by noon we traveled further to Florence (English) / Firenze (Italian). The next part of the tour we walked (which felt more like a marathon run lol) from the bus stop to the city center (2.5 miles) and viewed a leather shop and the copy of the famous Michealangelo’s David statue and a lot of the other famous fountains and statues around the city. During the “on our own” lunch time, we toured the famous Basilica of Santa Croce on the Florence square and finished off a gelato. Then came the mad dash back to the bus where we got lost from the guide who was walking too quickly and we almost did not make it back in time for the bus departure… Warning: This excursion is rated activity level 3 by NCL… This excursion is Not for the faint of heart or those that can’t walk long distances in several miles’ health wise. A few of the members on the tour opted to take a taxi at their own cost from the bus stop to the city center and then catch up to the tour guide in the lunch hour. Our phones claim we walked over 8 miles that day!
